Şimdiye dek Yeryüzünde beş kitlesel yokoluş yaşandı; altıncısının içinde yol almakta olduğumuz da bilimsel bir gerçek. Bu kitlesel yokoluşların içinde en şiddetlisi, yaklaşık 252 milyon yıl önce gerçekleşen Permian yokoluşuydu. Bu, Yeryüzü'ndeki hayatın yüzde 95’ini imha etti. Şimdi yaşadığımız kitlesel yokoluş süreci ise, antropojenik (yani insan eliyle yaratılan) küresel ısınmanın sonucu. Ve bu kez, on binlerce yıla yayılan Permian yokoluş sürecinin aksine, insanlık atmosferdeki CO2 seviyelerini çok daha büyük bir hızla yükseltmekte.
