It is difficult to grasp, and thus care about, that many people starving. Maybe it could help us to fathom this if we were able to imagine one person starving, our own self perhaps. What does it feel like to be hungry, really hungry, for many days? And many weeks? And longer.

A number of folks feel that current events -- particularly in the last few days -- have dramatically changed the logic and morality of what has been done in Afghanistan, calling into question much of the analysis and assessment that has been offered by critics of the war. Here are some of the questions we have been asked, and our brief replies.

I might as well admit to one of my shameful little secrets. I've enjoyed the Indiana Jones film series. And since I'm baring all, you might as well know: I doubt if I've missed a single James Bond movie (ever since way back when the still dashing Sean Connery was doing it, up to the current hero, whose name I don't recall). But then, I tend to be highly tolerant of my various (human) failings -- not to mention everyone else's.

The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the war in Afghanistan have dramatically accelerated a push by the Bush administration to strengthen presidential powers, giving George W. They thought it was all over. After civilisation's victory in Afghanistan, where the lion now lies down with the lamb, there was, almost all the newspapers agreed, nothing left to discuss. All that needed to be done was to remind those who had questioned the war just how profoundly wrong they were, and they would slip back under the stones from which they had crept.

There has been no sense of the ridiculous to the handful of days since John Simpson liberated Kabul. And yet so much is ridiculous. Not just us, quivering a week ago because an airliner had crashed on New York and Wall Street was plunging, then suddenly puffed with triumphalism and short-term memory loss as the Taliban scarpered. Osama bin Laden, too. He is, among other things, a ridiculous figure.

When the Iranian army massed on the western border of Afghanistan in 1998 and prepared to storm across the frontier to avenge the Taliban slaughter of its diplomats – and its Afghan allies – in Mazar-i-Sharif, it received a message from the Taliban leadership in Kandahar.

Over the past few days, I've been ordered on to a strict diet of my words. A stream of emails arrived from American readers with plenty of advice (get laid, get pregnant, shut your fat legs, shut up) and prognostications for my future (you'll be fired).
