With opposition rebels in control of nearly three-quarters of Afghanistan, Pentagon officials say the war is entering a distinctly new phase that may last longer and prove far more difficult for U.S. forces than the surprisingly swift advances of the first six weeks.

The desperate men holding out inside the besieged Taliban stronghold of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan are no strangers to murder and massacre – the two most senior Taliban commanders in the city have both been linked to one of the worst massacres that took place in Afghanistan under the Taliban, in which a 16-year-old boy was skinned alive.

Inside the White House the president is pacing, demanding his late-night fix of apples and peanut butter. They thought it was all over. After civilisation's victory in Afghanistan, where the lion now lies down with the lamb, there was, almost all the newspapers agreed, nothing left to discuss. All that needed to be done was to remind those who had questioned the war just how profoundly wrong they were, and they would slip back under the stones from which they had crept.
