They put some cloth in his mouth to keep the noise down. Then they pushed him face down on the floor, with a member of the Taliban sitting on each arm. In a prison cell in the bombed-out ruins of Kabul, Abdul Menan was last week beaten on his bare back with thick electric cable. The punishment was dished out twice a day. Menan lived. He was one of the lucky ones.

The PDPA which had a strong base in the army and air force carried out a coup d'etat in 1978, toppling the corrupt regime of Daoud. The people welcomed the change. The PDPA was initially popular. It pledged important social reforms and democracy. But the latter promise was never upheld even though important educational reforms were pushed through such as free education and schools for girls. In the cities girls and boys began to attend the same schools. Medical care was improved as well, but a bitter factional struggle led to the victory of a Pol-Pot faction led by Hafizullah Amin, who embarked on a campaign massive repression.

There is a recurring delusion that most problems in the world could be solved quite easily if the west would look beyond its narrow interests, try harder, and make up for the mistakes and crimes of the past. That western countries should indeed try harder, and would make a large difference if they did, is indisputable. Yet to see the exclusive key to a better future in changes in western policies is to ignore the irreducible responsibility of the non-western majority of mankind.

The assault on the World Trade Center was horrific, despicable, and unpardonable, but it is important not to lose perspective, especially a historical one. For a response that is dictated primarily by fury such as that now displayed by some American politicians, while understandable, is likely to simply serve as one more proof for Santayana's dictum that those who do not remember history are bound to repeat it.

Our aging Russian-built helicopter flew into the Panjshir valley from the north, high over desolate, brown hills. At Changaram, a narrow point in the valley where lush, green fields and terraces cling to the sides of the mountains, we landed.

A year since the outbreak of the intifada, living standards among Palestinians have fallen dramatically. Israel's stranglehold over the Palestinian economy is virtually complete and takes the form of over 150 military blockades erected in the West Bank and more than 40 in Gaza. To these must now be added the new buffer zone, established this week along the border between Israel the Palestinian areas. All entry and exit points to the West Bank and Gaza - even mountainous paths and dirt roads - have been closed.

As I walked the streets of Istanbul after watching the unbelievable images of the twin towers in New York blazing and collapsing, I met one of my neighbours. "Sir, have you seen, they have bombed America," he said, and added fiercely, "They did the right thing."

Since the September 11 attacks on the United States, most people in the world agree that the perpetrators need to be brought to justice, without killing many thousands of civilians in the process. But unfortunately, the U.S. military has always accepted massive civilian deaths as part of the cost of war. The military is now poised to kill thousands of foreign civilians, in order to prove that killing U.S. civilians is wrong.

On Monday Sept 17th we had an opportunity to catch up with Congresswoman Barbara Lee and talk to her about her decision to cast the only vote opposing President Bush's War resolution. Not even her fellow colleagues from the Congressional Black Caucus voted with her on this one. That includes such notable people like Maxine Waters, Charles Rengel, Jesse Jackson Jr., Cynthia McKinney to name a few. What is this all about?
